Working with Trauma and Emotional Pain using the Expanded Focusing Task

Working with Trauma and Emotional Pain using the Expanded Focusing Task

With Lou Cooper

13-14 June 2026

One of the major obstacles to working with traumatic experiences is the distress that this can evoke, often leading clients to withdraw from therapy.  The Expanded Focusing Task offers a way of processing trauma and emotional pain that allows clients to feel sufficiently safe to do this potentially life changing work.

In this workshop you will learn how to gently guide clients to revisit disturbing past events and work with them so that they no longer generate such heightened distress. The task draws on Emotion Focused Therapy and trauma informed practice. The workshop presents the clearly defined steps of the Task as developed by Dr Melissa Harte’s and outlined in her book Processing Emotional Pain Using Emotion Focused Therapy: A guide to safely working with and resolving emotional injuries and trauma (2019).

The workshop includes:

  • Reflection on the nature of trauma as it presents in the therapy space

  • Focus on how to create and maintain client safety during therapy

  • Step by step instruction in the Expanded Focusing Task

  • Video and live demonstration of the Task

  • Experiential opportunities to work with the Task

Who is this for

Whether you’re practicing or learning EFT, or if you’re interested in trauma work from other therapeutic perspectives, this workshop offers valuable tools and an approach that has the potential to transform your approach to working with trauma and emotional pain that can be easily integrated into your current practice.
